Whit Monday

The Pentecost marks the day when the Holly Spirit came down on Jesus’ disciples as he announced it on Ascension Day 9 days earlier. The Pentecost happens 49 days after Easter. Depending on these time frames, Whit Monday usually falls between May 10th and June 13th.

In 2004, not working on Whit Monday became optional. It still is a public holiday but people can work. Jean-Pierre Raffarin, then Prime Minister, decided that had to work and instead of being paid for that day, their earning would go straight to the national solidarity Fund for the elders and disabled people who massively died during the heatwave that year. Companies later got to choose the day they want to observe that solidarity working day.
