The Superlative Adverbs

Contrary to comparative adverbes, superlatives need a definite article.

 Superiority is expressed with le plus, whereas inferiority is expressed with le moins.

Rule #1

When a superlative refers to an adjective, it is built as follows:

  • Option 1: le {noun} le plus/moins + {adjective}
  • Option 2: le plus/moins + {adjective} + {noun}

The definite article agrees in number and gender with the noun it completes

  Example Translation
Option 1 Le train le plus rapide de l'Ouest The fastest train in the West
Alternative option 1 La fleur la plus jolie The prettiest flower
Option 2 Le plus jeune garçon The youngest boy
Alternative option 2 La plus jolie fleur The prettiest flower

Rule #2

When a superlative refers to another adverb, it is built as follows:

  • le plus/moins + {adverb}

The definite article is always le. It does not agree in number and gender with the noun it completes.

Example Translation
Rebecca écrit le plus lentement Rebecca writes the most slowly
Il travaille le moins efficacement He works the least efficiently

Rule #3

When a superlative refers to a noun, it is built as follows:

  • le plus/moins de + {noun}
Example Translation
C'est lui qui mange le plus de charcuterie He eats the most charcuterie
Il a vendu le moins de produits He sold the fewest products

Rule #4

When a superlative refers to a verb, it is built as follows:

  • {verb} + le plus/moins
Example Translation
Dany mange le plus Dany eats the most
Elle court le moins She runs the least

Exception

There are a few superlatives who have a special form.

  Example Translation
Le meilleur is the superior superlative of bon Okocha est le meilleur Okocha is the best
Le mieux is the superior superlative of bien Jazmine chante le mieux Jazmine sings the best
Le pire is the inferior superlative of mauvais Les migraines sont pire (que tout) Migraines are the worst
