The Comparative Adverbs Of Superiority / Inferiority

Superiority

Superiority is expressed with the word plus.


Rule #1

If the adverb refers to an adjective, another adverb, or a name, the sentence is built as follows: plus + adjective / adverb / name + que

When referring to Example Translation
An adjective Jean est plus grand que Pierre Jean is taller than Pierre
Another adverb Abraham lis plus lentement que John Abraham reads more slowly than John
A name Il a plus de baskets que toi

He has more sneakers than

 

Rule #2

If the adverb refers to verb, the sentence is built as follows: verb + plus + que

Example Translation
Zazie travaille plus que Carla Zazie works more than Carla


Exception

A few adverbs are irregular and cannot be employed with the word plus

  Example Translation
Meilleur is the superiority adverb of the adjective bon Les cerises sont meilleures que les framboises Cherries are better than raspberries
Mieux is the superiority adverb of the adjective bien Elle parle mieux qu'avant She speaks better than before

 

Inferiority

Inferiority is expressed with the word moins.


Rule #1

If the adverb refers to an adjective, another adverb, or a name, the sentence is built as follows: moinss + adjective / adverb / name + que

When referring to Example Translation
An adjective Rose est moins sévère qu'avant Rose is less strict than before
Another adverb Je danse  moins gracieusement que Laura I danse less graciously than Laura
A name Elle a moins de chansons que toi She has less songs than you

If the adverb refers to verb, the sentence is built as follows: verb + moins + que

Example Translation
Joshua lit moins que Steevy Joshua read less than Steevy

 

Exception

A few adverbs are irregular and cannot be employed with the word moins

  Example Translation
Pire is the inferiority adverb of the adjective mauvais Mes notes sont pires que les tiennes My grades are worse than yours
