Assumption Day

Picture of a sculpture of the Virgin Mary

On August 15th, we celebrate Virgin Mary going to Heaven. It is observed as a public holiday since August 15 1968 because King Louis XIII wanted to thanks Mary for allowing his wife, Anne d’Autriche, to be pregnant after trying for many years.

Be careful not to confuse Ascension (from the latin verb “ascendere” which means going up / to elevate) and Assumption (from the latin verb “assumere” which means to undertake / to take away). In her case, God came to take Mary’s body and soul to reunite her with her son, without waiting for the resurrection like Jesus.
